Timeout

The longest time a caller waits for a response before it gives up. A timeout frees the caller's thread or connection, so a slow dependency cannot hold it forever, but a timeout set too short fails calls that would have worked.

Every Link waits 30 s for an answer. After Timeouts and retries research, you can set each Link's timeout to 1, 5, or 30 s. A caller holds its slot only until the timeout, so a short timeout keeps a slow Database from filling every App Server slot, and calls past it fail as timeouts. A charge that times out and is retried can charge twice until you own Idempotency keys.
