Cold start

The delay and slow first requests when a new process, container, or function instance starts. It must boot, load code and data, and fill caches or JIT-compile hot code before it reaches full speed.

Runtimes

In Quorum#

A new or restarted App Server boots, then warms up. A Java (Tomcat) copy starts at 30% speed and needs 30 s to reach full speed, while Go starts at full speed. A new copy from an Autoscaler serves after 180 s on VMs, or 30 s in a Kubernetes Cluster. A restarted Cache comes back empty with Memcached or half warm with Redis, and a cold Database runs its queries at up to twice the CPU.
