Cache-aside

A caching pattern where the application checks the cache first. On a miss it reads the database and puts the result in the cache, and on a write it updates the database and invalidates the cached entry.

A Cache answers read queries it holds and sends misses on to the Database. Its hit ratio is √(memory / hot data) × TTL factor × warmth, with about 200 KB of hot data per user. Writes pass through and invalidate, so a write-heavy mix lowers hits. A longer TTL (10 s, 60 s, or 1 h) keeps more hits but serves more stale reads.
