ReferenceGlossary

Inverted index

An index that maps each word to the list of documents that contain it, like the index at the back of a book. Full-text search engines such as Lucene and Elasticsearch use it, and PostgreSQL offers it as a GIN index. A search reads a few short lists instead of scanning every row.

Data

Until you place a Search Engine, the Database answers q-search itself, at 80 ms of CPU per search: ten times a normal read. The Full-text search Research unlocks the Search Engine, which answers 400 searches per second per size step in about 15 ms. Link it to your App Servers and search stops loading the Database.
