ReferenceGlossary
Downsampling
Storing old metrics at a coarser resolution, such as one point per 5 minutes or per hour instead of per second. Long ranges stay cheap to keep and fast to draw. Each coarse point keeps the min, max, sum, and count of the points it replaces.

The Dashboard reads one-minute samples for the 1 h and 6 h ranges, 15-minute blocks (kept for 7 days) for 1 d and 7 d, and 1-hour blocks (kept for 30 days) for 30 d. Each chart draws a block as its mean. The p99 line draws the worst minute in each block instead, because an average would hide the spike.
